West Dorset
The beautiful West Dorset coastline and countryside is easily accessible from the M27, the A303 and M5. In 2006 the area was designated a World Heritage Site due to the preponderance of fossils dating from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Centres at Charmouth and Lyme Regis provide excursions to discover and explore this heritage and there are many Heritage Coast Centres and museums. Along the local coast there are 7 easily accessible recreational beaches and for those who enjoy walking the coastal path affords some of the most magnificent views comparable to anywhere in the world.
Bridport is the hub of the area being an old market town situated about 2miles from the coast, and serving the surrounding villages and rural areas with its lively twice weekly markets and shopping facilities providing national chains as well as individual stores. There is a well equipped leisure centre near the town centre and both the Arts Centre and Electric Palace Cinema entertainment centre provide stimulating and well supported arts and leisure activities. A new medical centre was completed in 2007 and there is also a small local hospital.
There are several restaurants, hotels and B&B's which cater for a range of tastes and there are many lovely inns and restaurants in the surrounding villages. Nearby there are fishing villages at West Bay with its harbour and a little further along at Beer. Golf courses are found particularly at West Bay and Lyme Regis. Subtropical gardens open to the public are at Abbostsbury which also boasts a swannery and the nearby Chesil beach is renowned as an outstanding nature reserve.
Generally schools are regarded as very good in the area. Several of the primary schools are described as "outstanding" in Ofsted reports. There is also a choice of three secondary schools which are either classed as outstanding or good.
